What is the change? The Ministry of Manpower has extended the suspension of new work visas for construction and cleaning industry workers.
What does the change mean? Employees in the construction and cleaning industries will not be able to apply for work visas for another six months. In addition, the ministry has expanded the list of companies that are exempt from the suspension to companies with more than 100 workers, as well as small and medium enterprises, or SMEs, that are properly registered at the Public Authority for SME Development and the Public Authority for Social Insurance.
Background: In 2014, Oman suspended the recruitment of foreign workers in the construction and cleaning industries. The suspension has now been extended for six months.
