The Costa Rican government has extended the validity of Immigration Identity Documents (DIMEX) for certain foreign nationals.

Key Points:

  • DIMEX documents that expired or are set to expire between Oct. 1, 2021, and Sept. 30, 2022, are now valid until Sept. 30, 2022, for individuals renewing their Permanent Residency, Temporary Residency, Special Categories or the Stay subcategory.
  • Costa Rican authorities will require foreign nationals to renew their DIMEX documents within three months after the Sept. 30 deadline.
  • Individuals will be required to pay an additional fine if their identification card expired before Jan. 10, 2022.

BAL Analysis: Immigration authorities may change the enrollment process for new DIMEX documents in the coming months. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to develop, and BAL will provide additional updates as information becomes available.
