Chile has announced it has extended its border closure through the end of May to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, including virus variants.

Key Points:

  • The closure applies to non-resident foreign nationals with exceptions for:
    • Diplomats.
    • Transit passengers.
    • Minors traveling with parents who are Chilean nationals or residents.
    • Travelers who, in the past 14 days, have not been in any country that has community transmission of COVID-19, as determined by the World Health Organization.
    • Travelers who have obtained official authorization to travel from a Chilean consulate for certain emergencies.
  • Chilean nationals and residents can travel to Chile if they:
    • Test negative for COVID-19 on a PCR test taken within 72 hours before the departure of their last flight for Chile.
    • Complete a sworn declaration to enter the country within 48 hours before the departure of their last flight for Chile.
    • Quarantine for 10 days upon arrival. The first five days must be completed in a quarantine hotel at the traveler’s expense. Travelers will be tested for COVID-19 on the fifth day of their quarantine. If the test is negative, they can complete the quarantine at home or another hotel. If it is positive, they must remain in the quarantine hotel for an additional 11 days.
  • Chilean and foreign nationals will be prohibited from leaving the country for the duration of the border closure with narrow exceptions for extreme cases. Exceptions can be requested online but will only be available for cases such as needing to travel for medical treatment or departing Chile without the intention to return.
  • Chile continues to enforce a curfew from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.
